SLLU uses a U-shaped low-profile platform so a hand pallet jack can drive into the opening, set the pallet on the arms of the U, and withdraw — no ramp and no pit. Marco describes the same idea for Euro pallets and crates; EdmoLift groups U- and E-shaped low-profile decks specifically for pallet handling with a hand pallet truck.

Loading method is the product
The U cut-out is not decoration. It defines which pallets fit, which jack widths clear the opening, and whether operators can complete a cycle without side transfer. Marco’s U-shaped low-profile models keep closed heights around 80–100 mm while sizing the pocket for pallet truck entry. If your site mixes closed-bottom skids or non-Euro footprints, confirm geometry before you assume SLLU will behave like a solid SLL with a ramp.

Why skip the ramp
A solid low-profile table needs approach space for a ramp. A U-shaped table trades that floor area for a front opening. UK and EU product notes repeatedly sell the benefit as cleaner installation: drive in, lower the forks, lift. That is ideal for packing cells and pallet levelling where aisle space is scarce and cycle time matters.

Ergonomics in use
Once the pallet sits on the U arms, the table raises so the working layer stays near elbow height as the stack grows or shrinks. That is the classic pallet-positioner workflow European low-profile makers promote for manual loading and unloading. Stroke is typically workstation-scale (hundreds of millimetres), not mezzanine-scale. Do not brief SLLU as a high-lift substitute for SLV2/SLV3.

U vs E vs solid low-profile
U-shape: drive-in from the open end for open-bottom pallets. E-shape (where offered): extra support fingers for heavier or less stable pallet bases. Solid SLL: any wheeled load via ramp, including closed bases that cannot sit on U arms. Choose SLLU when the dominant cycle is pallet jack in / pallet jack out on compatible pallets. Choose SLL/SLLW when loads vary or need a continuous deck.

Specification traps
Write down pallet type (Euro 800×1200 vs others), jack overall width, fork length, and whether the pallet bottom boards leave clearance for withdrawal. State capacity with the load centred on the U arms — not with mass hanging beyond the unsupported opening. Confirm EN 1570-1 safeguarding around the open throat, because the missing deck material changes pinch and shear exposure compared with a solid platform.

Brief checklist for an SLLU drawing
1) Pallet standard and bottom-board layout
2) Pallet jack width vs U opening, plus approach aisle
3) Required H MIN / working stroke for ergonomic layers
4) Rated load on the supported arms, including uneven stacks
5) Guarding concept for the open front and EN 1570-1 use case
With those answers fixed, SLLU becomes a fast, pit-free pallet exchanger — not a compromised solid table with a hole cut afterwards.
