Equipment know-how starts before the catalog page. Whether you need a scissor lift table, a goods lift, or a welding fixture, the drawing only helps if the machine matches the real job.
Use this short brief before you compare models or open a CAD package.
1. Name the duty, not the product family
Write what the equipment must do in one sentence: lift a pallet to mezzanine height, hold a weldment flat, stage parts for assembly. Duty language keeps you from buying the wrong class of machine.
2. Capture the full working load
Include product, fixture, pallet, tooling, and anything that rides with the load. Capacity should cover the complete working stack, not only the heaviest single part.
3. Map access and clearances
Note approach direction, operator sides, forklift or pallet-truck paths, and the space needed at full travel. Many layout problems are access problems, not mechanism problems.
4. Define interfaces early
List floor fixings, power, controls, guarding, and how the equipment connects to conveyors, tables, or upstream machines. Interfaces decide whether a standard configuration is enough.
5. Lock the envelope before you download
Closed height, raised height, platform size, and footprint should be written down before you open files. A clear envelope makes CAD comparison fast and avoids redraws later.
Good equipment know-how is a short brief: duty, load, access, interfaces, envelope. Fill those five lines first; then the right drawing is easier to choose and easier to use.
